Xhibit App — Web Application
Xhibit App — The Background:
Xerte Online Toolkits is an open-source e-learning authoring tool, which allows educators, with limited web development skills, to build interactive learning resources.
Educators are empowered to create engaging, accessible, and media rich online learning resources, without needing support from web developers or learning technologists. This speeds up the process of creating open educational resources.
For many years, customising the design of Xerte resources had been off-limits, especially for non-technical users. This was because theming required expert coding knowledge, such as HTML and CSS. Many educators had expressed an open desire to not only create their new learning resources, but style them too!
While working for the University of Nottingham, me and my former colleague — James Roscoe — saw an opportunity in the market. So, we set about designing and building a complimentary web application to enable the Xerte community to produce their very own custom themes (i.e., stylesheets), without having to write any complicated code.
Together, we designed, tested, developed, and launched Xhibit App. The app features a design tool, allowing users to choose their colour schemes, backgrounds, fonts, icons, and menus. The design choices display in real-time via a customised preview window.
With Xhibit App, educators can then export their completed theme with the simple click of a button. All the code is generated in the background and complied into a downloadable CSS (stylesheet) file.
An advanced export option is also available, allowing school or university IT administrators to export themes for institution-wide delivery.
