“How can I create a data portfolio similar to yours?”

That’s a question someone in my network asked me earlier this week.

I was more than happy to share what I’ve learned. That’s because supporting others is what I’m all about. ❤️

But then I thought, maybe more people could benefit from the same advice.

So, I’ve put together my top tips for creating a standout data portfolio website.

1. Invest in a Domain

  • Purchase a professional domain for your data portfolio.
  • Try to buy yourname.com, or if that isn’t available, use your own country’s domain suffix, e.g. .co.uk or .in
  • Helps with SEO when somebody Google’s your name
  • Allows you to create a professional mailbox for incoming job enquiries, e.g. hello@yourname.com

2. Pick your website platform

  • Choose a website platform that aligns with your skills
  • Already experienced with HTML/CSS development? Why not develop your own theme in WordPress or a similar CMS?
  • Not sure how to code a website? Don’t worry! Use a third-party platform such as Squarespace, Webflow, Wix, or Carrd
  • Some platforms are free to use, while others involve subscriptions. Invest in yourself!

3. Less is more!

  • Don’t overload your portfolio with dozens of projects.
  • Aim to include 3-5 high-quality examples of your work.
  • Remember to highlight the insights you found.
  • Keep it visual! Remember to include high-quality images or videos of your work.

4. Play to your strengths

  • Align your projects with industries you know, or have a passion for.
  • Leverage your existing domain knowledge or expertise
  • Show hiring managers you already speak their language. Domain knowledge and data expertise are gold dust.

5. Link Out!

  • Include links to your code, making it easy for recruiters to explore.
  • Share a link to your GitHub profile, showcasing your SQL, R, and Python code.
  • Link out to Tableau Public as an extension of your data visualisations
  • Help recruiters to verify your skills with links to real projects you have completed.

Hope this helps someone out there! You’ve got this!
