Background:
On the dark, cold night of 24 March 1944, 76 Allied prisoners escaped from Stalag Luft III – a German POW camp. 🪖
This daring feat of ingenuity and courage became known as The Great Escape.
Many people know this story from the classic 1963 movie starring Steve McQueen, who soared over barbed wire fences on his motorcycle. But behind the Hollywood glamour lies a remarkable and tragic true story of real men who risked everything for freedom.
I’ve always wanted to share their story and with Tableau, I finally could.
My latest viz blends data-driven storytelling with interactive e-learning. It lets users explore how 600 men built three remarkable underground tunnels, hoping to escape the camp and return home to their families.
This project brings together everything I’ve learned in Tableau, from map layers and dynamic zone visibility, to custom menus and parameter actions.
It’s dedicated to the 50 men who were murdered after taking part in The Great Escape and to all those affected by war, past and present.
