Background:
Regardless of your political stance, Donald Trump’s influence is undeniable. 🌍
As the 47th (and 45th) President of the United States, he’s rarely been out of the headlines this year.
But how has his approval rating fared after his first 100 days in office? 🤔
Well, that depends on who you ask.
What isn’t up for debate is that Trump’s job approval rating has declined across a broad range of demographic and partisan groups.
And this was the focus of my latest #MakeoverMonday challenge.
My initial idea for this viz was to reflect Trump’s approval ratings directly within the “100 Days” title. Visually embedding data into the headline itself. This concept was sparked by a fantastic design I saw recently from Anna Clara Gatti.
I explored several layout options. At first, I used a single donut chart inside one of the zeros. But given how divided Americans are on Trump, I chose a more fragmented design. I distributed the data across the full “100” to emphasise that feeling of polarisation.
I originally planned to split this viz across three dashboards with navigation buttons, but I suspected there had to be a better way.
And there was!
Enter Tim Ngwena (aka Tableau Tim) and Dynamic Zone Visibility!
After watching Tim’s brilliant tutorial, I used Dynamic Zone Visibility to hide and reveal zones (tiled or floating dashboard elements) based on parameters.
This allowed me to house three views (the 100 title screen, approval bar charts, and insights) within a single dashboard and navigate between them dynamically.
I also built a custom navigation menu using circles, colour, and shapes to guide the experience. Users can also toggle between the detailed and net values for each demographic.
